Cross River Reservoir
The Vampire Prince’s BrideCross River Reservoir is the body of water beside Oak Hills, placing the New York Pack’s compound between the reservoir and War Pound Ridge Reservation. Its importance is less as an isolated destination than as part of the protected landscape that makes the pack’s separation from human society physically legible.
Setting and Boundaries
Cross River Reservoir is identified as one of the two major geographic markers surrounding Oak Hills, the other being War Pound Ridge Reservation. Oak Hills is described publicly as a luxurious gated community, but the New York Pack uses the more private name “the compound.” The reservoir therefore belongs to the outward-facing description of a wealthy residential area while also helping define the secluded territory understood by pack members.
Relation to Oak Hills
Janet’s sedan takes a little over an hour to travel from downtown Manhattan to Oak Hills’ front gate. That journey establishes a clear movement from the densely populated human city to a guarded supernatural enclave. Cross River Reservoir contributes to the enclave’s sense of remove: it is part of the landscape that surrounds the community and helps distinguish the pack’s grounds from ordinary urban space.
The grounds of Oak Hills contain individually owned houses and communal buildings gathered near the center of the property, below the small rise on which the Big House stands. Although not every pack member lives there, families with children favor the safety and freedom of living away from humans until their children are old enough to control their preternatural abilities. The reservoir is consequently associated with a larger protective environment whose value is measured in privacy, distance, and room for supernatural families to develop away from human observation.
Narrative Significance
Cross River Reservoir functions as a boundary-setting detail rather than the site of a separately recorded confrontation or spectacle. By locating Oak Hills between the reservoir and the reservation, the narrative turns geography into social structure: the pack’s secrecy and security are not abstract ideas but conditions reinforced by gates, distance, surrounding wilderness, and controlled access. The reservoir helps make the New York Pack’s divided existence visible, with Manhattan representing the human world and Oak Hills representing a community organized around supernatural identity and family safety.
